"All I Need" Townes Van Zandt
Brand new song from Townes Van Zandt on upcoming album "Sky Blue" Release date 3-7-2019
Townes Van Zandt
Here’s a time capsule that Townes created forty-six years ago, now presented to the world by his family on March 7, the 75th anniversary of Townes’ birth.
The capsule contains eleven unreleased recordings composed of two new songs, a re-worked “Blue Ridge Mountains”, a venerable east Tennessee murder ballad, Richard Dobson and Tom Paxton covers and versions of five Van Zandt gems, all in solo, acoustic performances.
SKY BLUE was conceived by Townes’ children: J.T., Will, Katie Belle and former wife/literary executor Jeanene. The recordings come from the legendary early 1973 basement sessions with the late Bill Hedgepeth, a longtime Van Zandt friend and confidant. (That’s Bill talking with Townes at the beginning of the film, BE HERE TO LOVE ME).
SKY BLUE also illustrates Townes’ spare, clean and tasty flat-picking, all his licks in just the right places, just like his lyrics, all that’s needed and nothing more.
His delightfully twisted sense of humor is on full display in songs starring a devious snake, another a vicious spider. Those songs, “Pancho & Lefty” and “Silver Ships of Andilar” predate their later recordings, the latter pair debuted on THE LATE GREAT TOWNES VAN ZANDT.
SKY BLUE then, is a cause for celebration! It’s like hearing from an old, dear friend you thought was gone from your life forever. Both create a warm feeling that flows through you like a summer Thursday. Thanks, Townes, this is a really delightful birthday present!
